mensaje en las nubes is a composition for Sputter Box Ensemble that draws inspiration from the mysterious phenomenon of the cuviví, the indigenous Ecuadorean name for the Upland Sandpiper. Every year, during its migration from North to South America, hundreds of these birds plunge into the freezing waters of the Ozogoche lakes in the Andes, a phenomenon considered a sacred offering by local communities. Though the exact cause remains scientifically unexplained, this event holds deep cultural significance.
The piece draws a parallel between this phenomenon and the experience of migrants crossing the Darién Gap. It explores migration as a response to difficult conditions in the countries of origin, focusing on the current situation in Ecuador while also referencing the experiences of those undertaking this journey.
composition for soprano, bass clarinet, percussion, electronics and video, world premiere at Sputter (PLUGS IN THE) Box concert, Brooklyn, NY, USA (December 2024)
